Festival of Tolerance - JFF Zagreb extends its successful concept of Tolerance Talk discussions beyond the festival itself. Film and Discussion EU (F&D EU) is a continuation of the festival platform on which current social events are covered through film screening, followed by discussion by respected experts. Two issues will be held in September to discuss important issues for the European Union.
A fascinating documentary, Midnight Traveler, will be screened at the Kaptol Boutique Cinema (Hall 2) on Thursday, September 12 at 7 pm in Zagreb and after the screening there will be a discussion on refugees and migrants. After the documentary Peace Hassan Fazili was shown on Afghan state television, the Taliban killed the protagonist and blackmailed Hassan's head. The director knew he had no choice but to run away from home with his wife and daughters. The long-running security saga has been documented by the entire family with cameras on their cell phones. This autobiographical film begins when they are denied protection as refugees, followed by a jurney along the Balkan smuggling route. Midnight Traveler has been honored at many prominent film festivals: Berlinale, Sundance, Dokufest and Thessaloniki to name just a few.
After the film, the issue of refugees and migrants will be discussed by Indira Beganovic, UNHCR Representative in Croatia, Emily Nicholson, Counsellor and Consul from Embassy of Canada to the Republic of Croatia, Tvrtko Barun, Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service in Southeast Europe and other guests. The moderator of the discussion is Jasmina Popovic. The topics of discussion will be different perspectives on the refugee reception process - from countries of first asylum to countries that support them in solidarity. The issue of resettlement programs to Croatia will also be discussed, as well as the increasing global need for safe and legal refugee routes.
Admission to the movie and discussion is free. The project was implemented with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and UNHCR in the Republic of Croatia.
